On Transitions

How fitting that my first blog post would be on Transitions. Sums up most of our personal and professional lives. As a professional in the Change and Transformation space and a coach, what I know to be true is that, as much as having a clear vision of where an organization wants to go is important, intentionally planning for and managing the transition to this vision is critical to success.

Change is constant. Change is necessary for growth. Growth is hard and sometimes painful. We know this to be true or at least acknowledge these fundamental principles of life. So why do we struggle to embrace change? what makes change so hard to flow through with ease if we know on the other side awaits the thing we desire/ seek/want/yearn for to be fulfilled and succeed?

My experience, and those of many I have met in my professional and personal journey, attest to this. The ability to ease and flow through change depends on how you intentionally navigate the fog of transition. Who are you being? What are you consciously choosing to focus on?

Flowing through transitions with ease is an “inside job” as William Bridges perfectly sums it up “It isn't the changes that do you in, it's the transitions. Change is not the same as transition. Change is situational: the new site, the new boss, the new team roles, the new policy. Transition is the psychological process people go through to come to terms with the new situation. Change is external, transition is internal”

I have been reflecting on the life journeys this summer and in particular connected to stories of so many women going through transitions and struggling to flow with ease through it. Three things struck me:

  1. A lot of women in transition feel disconnected from themselves (“I don’t know who I am anymore”) and disconnected from others (“I don’t know my place in society anymore”).

  2. They feel lonely (“No one else is going through this” “No one understands”)

  3. They don’t know where to start. They feel overwhelmed. They feel stuck.

So, here is an start. If you know any woman who is going through a transition in their life then invite her to this free seminar. Its a good start.
